If you want to experience the whole saga, then you can dip in the GOG Homeworld promo which includes the whole catalogue: In addition to the base game, there are also the Expedition Guide, Soban Fleet, and Khaaneph Fleet DLC as well as the soundtrack to be purchased separately. The game is now available on GOG with a 66% discount that will last until June 29, 4PM UTC. Maybe that’s the problem, as it doesn’t differentiate itself too much from the standard genre fare, but if one wants to see what happened before the war was taken into space, this might be the perfect way to experience it. Production values in graphics and sounds are high as well, being reminiscent of the Dune RTS titles. One shouldn’t expect the same atmosphere or gameplay as in the original game due to the space/ground differences, but what’s on show here is mightily impressive, with lots of detailed vehicles on or above the sand and explosive battles to be fought. With the appearance of a mysterious anomaly, the future of them is ready to be changed, which of course means war on the dunes and in the air. Being set prior to the events of Homeworld, the setting makes sense, as it’s about the desert of Kharak where clans fight against each other for supremacy. Despite being published by Gearbox, the game was made by Blackbird Interactive, formed by employees of Relic Entertainment, the original developer of the series. If battles on the ground are more to your liking, but you’d still like to have the Homeworld universe, then Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak might be the best compromise, especially since it offers modern graphics thanks to its relatively recent 2016 release. The game is now exclusively available on GOG with a 10% discount that will last until June 29, 4PM UTC. Maybe if many people decide to buy the product it will convince Gearbox to put more effort in a newer update.

The renamed title doesn’t have any new features or better graphics and sounds with it, as in the recently released remastered versions, but for a 2000 game it still looks quite impressive. The sequel brought lots of changes that resulted in more fluid gameplay, like fast-forwarding time, and it seems that it’s seen by many to be the better game. It’s not all about fighting in space, as research and upgrading ships is as important as sending various crafts against the enemies or collecting resources. While it might not be the most original of sci-fi stories, it seems that it’s efficient enough to carry the player from one mission to the next. Homeworld: Emergence is set 15 years after the events of the original and is about an alien race called the beast threatening one’s starships and new home. Unlike traditional base-building and unit fighting, it all took place in space and required spatial awareness, because the third dimension added to the difficulty of trying different strategies to surround and destroy the enemy ships. Maybe this was the reason why I only tried the demo, but it nevertheless gave me a unique experience. I still remember playing the first Homeworld that was tough as nails. Copyright problems aside, it’s great to be able to play all of the Homeworld games now in digital form. Due to legal problems with Blizzard which made “Cataclysm” a registered trademark, the game was lost, but is now finally available with the new name Homeworld: Emergence. This was Homeworld: Cataclysm which wasn’t developed by the same company, but by Barking Dog Studios (later renamed to Rockstar Games!). While the difficulty made it less accessible for newcomers to the genre, it didn’t take long for a standalone add-on to arrive.
